Roaming Spirits: Street Cats of Japan and England

For this project, I’ve chosen to document the lives of cats roaming the streets of England and Japan, capturing the contrasts between domestic cats in England and the wild, free-roaming felines in Japan. My fascination with street cats began while in Japan, where I discovered that these animals roam untethered through urban spaces, living independently alongside human society. The sight of cats weaving through narrow alleyways or resting on temple steps inspired me to explore their unique lives, straddling the line between wildness and domestication.

In Japan, street cats are often wild yet deeply integrated into the fabric of the local community. They roam freely, sometimes forming colonies, and are often treated with respect by locals, who feed them but rarely claim ownership. Their ability to survive in densely populated cities, from bustling urban centers to quieter neighbourhoods, highlights their resilience and adaptability. These cats interact with their surroundings with a level of freedom that contrasts sharply with the more confined life of their counterparts in England.

In England, cats are largely domesticated, with a strong sense of ownership attached to them. Most English cats, while enjoying outdoor exploration, often return to the comfort of their homes. They can be seen lounging on garden walls or sunbathing in windowsills, their independence tempered by the safety of domestic life. The contrast between the wild, communal life of Japanese street cats and the sheltered, often solitary lives of English domestic cats reflects the cultural and environmental differences in how humans and animals coexist.

Through this photographic project, I aim to showcase these contrasts, capturing the different rhythms of life these cats navigate, whether wild in Japan or domesticated in England.

このプロジェクトでは、イギリスと日本の街を歩き回る猫たちの生活を記録し、イギリスの飼い猫と日本の野生で自由に行動する猫たちの対比を捉えることを目指しています。私が路上で猫を撮影することに魅了されたのは日本での経験から始まりました。日本では、これらの猫たちが都市空間を自由に移動し、人間社会の中で独立して生きていることに気付きました。狭い路地をすり抜けたり、寺院の階段で休んだりする猫たちの姿は、野生と飼育の境界線を歩む彼らの独特な生活を探求したいという思いを掻き立てました。

日本では、街猫はしばしば野生の状態にある一方で、地域社会に深く溶け込んでいます。自由に歩き回り、時にはコロニーを形成し、住民からは食事を提供されるものの、所有されることは稀です。都市の喧騒から静かな住宅街まで、密集した都市環境の中で生き延びる彼らの能力は、その適応力とたくましさを物語っています。これらの猫は、イギリスのより制約された飼い猫たちとは対照的に、周囲と自由に関わり合いながら生活しています。

一方、イギリスでは、猫は主に飼い猫として扱われ、所有感が強く付随しています。多くのイギリスの猫は外での冒険を楽しんでいる一方で、快適な家に戻ることが一般的です。庭の壁でくつろいだり、窓際で日光浴をしている姿が見られますが、その独立性は家庭の安全の中で抑えられています。日本の街猫の野生的で共同体的な生活と、イギリスの飼い猫の安全で孤立した生活の対比は、人間と動物が共存する文化的および環境的な違いを反映しています。

この写真プロジェクトを通して、こうした対比を描写し、日本で野生の猫とイギリスで飼育される猫が歩む異なる生活のリズムを捉えることを目指しています。
